Before you can use your VA home loan benefit, one document is required: a Certificate of Eligibility. Most veterans can get it in minutes through their lender. Here’s what it is, why it matters, and exactly how to obtain it.

What Is a Certificate of Eligibility?

The Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is issued by the VA and confirms to lenders that you’re eligible for the VA home loan benefit. It also displays your available entitlement — the amount VA will guarantee on your loan. No VA loan can be processed or closed without a valid COE.

Important: A COE proves eligibility — not loan approval. You still need to meet the lender’s credit and income requirements.

Three Ways to Get Your COE

Documents Required by Service Type

Service TypeDocument Needed
Discharged veteran (regular military)DD-214 (Member Copy 2, 4, or 8)
Active-duty service memberStatement of Service signed by commander, adjutant, or personnel office
Discharged National Guard / ReserveNGB Form 22 or Reserve Points Statement with character of service

Surviving spouseVeteran’s DD-214, marriage certificate, death certificate, DIC award letter

What the COE Shows

Your COE displays your available entitlement and whether you’re exempt from the VA funding fee due to a service-connected disability. For most veterans with full entitlement, there is effectively no loan limit.

Lost your DD-214? Request military records through the National Archives (archives.gov) or by submitting SF-180. Your lender can often begin the process while you gather documents.
